"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." - Thomas Jefferson

Introduction

A few years ago, I spent a period of time where I was tutoring home school students in mathematics.  On that occasion, I did quite a bit of research into school curricula and what was being taught in our schools.  It shook my belief that the United States could survive as a free nation.  I have waffled in that opinion some since, but one thing that I am certain of is that we, as a nation, cannot survive free with an electorate as horribly educated as ours has become.  The following list of books should all be taught again and again in elementary school, middle school, and high school, undergraduate and graduate schools across the nation, without fail, in every course of study, without regard to the major subject of the student.  I welcome suggestions for additions to this list.  I defy you to justify removing one of them.  Enjoy! -- William E. Sadler

The Five Thousand Year Leap: Twenty-Eight Great Ideas That Are Changing the World by Cleon Skousen

The book asserts that the United States prospered because it was established upon universal natural law principles passed down from Common Law and traditional Judeo-Christian morality, as many of the Founding Fathers were guided by the Bible among others, and consequently that the U.S. Constitution incorporates enlightened ideas.

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

It is symbolic that Adam Smith’s masterpiece of economic analysis, The Wealth of Nations, was first published in 1776, the same year as the Declaration of Independence. In his book, Smith fervently extolled the simple yet enlightened notion that individuals are fully capable of setting and regulating prices for their own goods and services. He argued passionately in favor of free trade, yet stood up for the little guy. The Wealth of Nations provided the first - and still the most eloquent - integrated description of the workings of a market economy. The result of Smith’s efforts is a witty, highly readable work of genius filled with prescient theories that form the basis of a thriving capitalist system. This unabridged edition offers the modern reader a fresh look at a timeless and seminal work that revolutionized the way governments and individuals view the creation and dispersion of wealth--and that continues to influence our economy right up to the present day.

Firearms

To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth by Jeff Cooper
The second anthology of Jeff Cooper, the world's foremost authority on defensive weaponcraft. Covers a variety of subjects from war to guns to hunting to historical biography.  Almost a philosophy book, less on what to buy and how to shoot, although if you read it you will get that, it covers much more the attitude required for freemen everywhere.

The Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip by Jeff Cooper

This is a collection of stories and anicdotes from the dean of pistol, Jeff Cooper.  Based on stories and wisdom from the 'family' of shooters who have trained at Gunsite, this is an indespensible tome of wisdom for those who pursue excellence with arms.

Mathematics

Calculus Made Easy by Sylvanius Thompson and Martin Gardner

Excellent read for an essential exposure to the Calculus. For both elementary and advanced approaches to Calculus.
